Your bedroom may not be the most used room in your house, unless you’re a teenager, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the most important rooms in the home. So, with that in mind, here’s what to remember when decorating your bedroom so that it’s no longer just a place to sleep.
When Decorating Your Bedroom, Think About the Cost
First of all, if you feel that you want to spend a lot of money, then you may be better off hiring a bedroom decorator. Not only will you get lots of different ideas, but you will be unlikely to make expensive mistakes that will need to be fixed in the future. However, this article is not really for people with tons of money; it’s for people like you and me.
So, your bedroom should be relaxing and welcoming, not intimidating. If you have an old or dull bedroom, you will want to make changes so you get a look that’s more fun and interesting. Basically, if you don’t have a bedroom that you want to be in, you need to fix that first and foremost.
Decorating Your Bedroom Walls
Many of the articles I write have paint in them somewhere and this one is no different. The colour of a room is one of the first things anyone notices. I know this because my father decided to paint our sitting room orange one day. It was truly awful and, of course, it was pretty much the first thing anyone ever talked about, and my dad had some really nice antiques in the room, that no one ever noticed, because that orange was so overpowering.
If you’re starting from scratch, then you have pretty much carte blanche on what colour you want. However, don’t go too crazy. Bright colours in a bedroom make wake you up just when you are most ready to go to sleep. You want something relaxing that helps you forget your worries. Colours like pastel blue and green work very well for this. Don’t go too light, as it will keep you up, or too dark, as you’re not a vampire, I assume.
If you already have the furniture for your bedroom then you want to keep that in mind when choosing colours for your walls. Neutral colours work well with many types of bedroom furniture. And if you are in any doubt, you could always just go with white paint, as this colour goes with anything.
It’s worth adding that wallpaper is also an option. I have to confessed that I am not a great fan of wallpaper, but I do plan to write some articles in the future about wallpapering your bedroom and how to do it. Until that time, you can check out this article, which has some great advice. Now let’s move on to furnishings.
Furnishings When Decorating Your Bedroom
The best place to start is the bed. To say it needs to be comfortable is stating the obvious, so I won’t be saying that. However, one of the best things about a bed, especially if it’s a double bed, is the amount of storage you can have underneath it. So, if you have a lot of stuff lying around your bedroom, or closets full of bits and pieces, then a bed with storage would be a great idea.
As your bed is probably the main part of the bedroom, unless you have a huge wardrobe or chest of drawers, all your other furnishings should go with your bed. If you have a bed that’s all ‘princessy’ (which you probably don’t unless you’re reading this because you have a 10-year-old), then your main furnishings should reflect that odd choice. If you have a metal frame bed, then you can relax a bit more as many types of furniture goes with it.
Having a Theme When Decorating Your Bedroom
Speaking of things ‘princessy’, having a theme for your bedroom may be a good first start. Again, I’m not a great fan of themes, mainly because I think that themes make rooms to restrictive in what you can then do. However, I may be in a minority about themes, so think about one if you want. And if you do, you may want to check out some large furniture stores that seem to love this kind of thing.
Having said all that, if you are thinking about that 10-year-old, or any kids you may have, then you really should think about a theme. The more your kids have a bedroom that they love, the more likely they will be to go to bed at the time you want. So, to sum up, Barbie or Batman themed bedrooms are great for kids, but royalty or Star Trek (which my wife just laughs at when I bring up the idea) when you’re an adult, not so much.
Other Furniture When Thinking About Your Bedroom
I could go on and on about the other furnishings in your bedroom but I don’t want this article to be too long. In the future, I plan to write about all the different types of furniture and what to think about when choosing them, but for the time being, I’m just going to keep this simple.
The most important thing to remember is that there are only three or four types of furniture you want to think about: the wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables, and a dressing table if you need one. These are the furnishings that stand out and the ones that need to go with the bed and bedroom walls. Get this right and you’ll have a good chance of ending up with a great looking bedroom.
If you are buying new furniture, you can take the easy option and head to The Range, which will have a ton of good stuff, or other major outlet. Or if you want to support smaller shops, you could try your local furniture shop. If you are looking for preloved furniture, your local secondhand furniture store, auction house or British Heart Foundation store would be a great choice.
The great thing about secondhand furniture is that if it’s not the right colour or it’s natural wood, then you can repaint it so it will go with the colours you have chosen already. The other great thing about this option is it’s just way more fun. Mind you, it’s time-consuming and if you don’t think you can invest the time to do it well, then it’s probably not for you.
Think About What Type of Flooring You Want
One thing I haven’t mentioned yet when decorating your bedroom, is what type of flooring you want. Original floorboards is always a good option, but they may not be up to the task. If your floorboards look horrible, laminate floorings are definitely a good way to go. Finally, if you live somewhere that is colder than the norm, then carpeting is definitely a better choice, unless you want to install underfloor heating, of course.
Something worth bearing in mind is that whatever you choose, it should be easy to keep clean. If you’re going with the floorboard idea or laminate flooring, both are fairly easy to clean. If you want to lay down some carpet, don’t choose a type of carpet that is difficult to clean. Most people hate hoovering, so don’t opt for something that increases the amount you need to do.
Adding Ornaments to Your Bedroom Walls
I have mentioned a couple if things I’m not a huge fan of, but one thing I love is adding shelving and ornaments to a bedroom. It’s one of the main reasons I set up Total Mart UK in the first place. And this is why you can find loads of shelving choices on this site and even more choices when it comes to ornaments, figurines, and giftware.
One thing you do need to keep in mind is that the shelving and ornaments should go together. If you have ornaments that are old-fashioned or ‘olde worlde’, then shelving of a more rustic nature, or at the vary least neutral, would be a great choice. If your ornaments are more modern, then a more modern style (or neutral) shelving may be a better way to go.
Wrapping Up Decorating Your Bedroom
There are many options available when it comes to decorating your bedroom; I’ve only given you a very brief overview here. One final tip I would like to leave you with. Whatever furnishings you decide to go with, like your floor, they should be easy to keep clean because if there is one thing that will turn you off your bedroom, it will be if you have made it high maintenance.
