In most homes, the living room is the most used room in the home, which is why it’s important to think before you decorate your living room. You want to make it as comfy as possible as you will be spending a great deal of time there. Plus, of course, you’ll want it to look nice for any guests you may be entertaining.
Decide on What You Actually Want to Do
When you decide to redecorate your living room, the first thing you need to do is to decide whether you want to tackle the whole room or if you want to redo parts of it. If you decide to redo the whole room you will have an easier time putting everything in its place as you will just have one theme to think about. If you do decide to do the whole living room you will need a good plan before you actually begin. Start with a budget and decide how much you want to spend and what you want the room to look like.
Think About the Carpeting
One of the first things you will probably want to look at if you decide to redo your whole living room is the carpet. Chances are that if you don’t replace the carpet before redecorating the room it will have to be replaced after the redecorating is completed. Since you most likely won’t be able to use the room until after the redecorating is completed, you want to make sure that you like the carpet colour and the texture. Many times a carpet will not be available at your local store, so make sure you shop for a good quality paint, furniture, and accessories.
Decorating Your Walls and Ceiling
You will also want to look at your walls as they will show the most and take up the most wall space. With that in mind, you should decide how you will cover the walls. Using paint is a very effective way to cover up wall imperfections and to add texture to the walls. If your ceilings are fairly high you may want to consider staining them. Similarly, if they are relatively low, starting with a nice elevation of your ceiling would reflect and give the room a “high end” overall feel.
This isn’t an article about painting, so rather than try and explain the best colours for decorating your living room, I’ll let the experts do it. Head over to PPG Paints and read this great article on what you need to consider when choosing the best colours for decorating your living room.
Thinking About a Less ‘Flat’ Look
A certain look that is desirable is panels and bare spaces between panels (allowing the walls to show), but driver lamps, arco lamps and series tables are all good choices. Plus, adding panels to the wall would take away from the overall ‘flatness’ of the walls. With that said, if you are either replacing your large furniture or adding larger furniture, you should consider whether you want the walls on the doors and windows treated, or if you want the colour to be reflected on the windows.
Of course, one way to make walls look less flat and boring is to hang more things on them. While pictures and paintings are the more traditional way to go, I am a great fan of hanging shelves and ornaments. Fortunately, we have many such items on the Total Mart UK website, and at very reasonable prices. So, after reading this, you may want to head over there and take a look.
Adding More Modern Furniture
Once you have decided what you’re going to do with the walls, ceilings, and windows, you need to consider what furniture you want. If you have gone for a modern look, then you’ll probably want to consider replacing your old furnishings. However, even if you have gone for a trendy look, that doesn’t mean you can’t use more rustic-looking items around the living room. It really depends on you.
Adding More Lights and Lamps
You will also want to consider a dimming system for the lighting to set the mood. This is a nice touch and will allow you to have both bright lighting for normal use and less lighting romantic evening for two. You can either purchase a system like that, or you can build your own.
Of course, yu can also just go down the more traditional route of buying table lamps. If you do, you’ll be glad to know that we have some great looking lamps that will certainly add to the overall appearance of any living room, and will help to lighten up those dark corners, as well.
Wrapping It All Up
Most living rooms are the most used rooms in the house during waking hours and need to be treated with respect. Thinking about how you’re going to decorate your living room takes time, but with patience, you’ll end up with something that you’ll enjoy sitting in for years to come.
